The hike is approximately 4 miles\, 2 miles up and 2 miles back. These hikes are appropriate for beginners in good health. We will carpool to the hike from the mission. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Land Trust Trek on Tuesday\, May 28th from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at More Mesa for a stroll all about birds! The More Mesa open space includes oak woodland and riparian habitat and has nice trails that are popular with local birdwatchers\, bikers and horseback riders. Just west of Hope Ranch\, this 300-acre open space is beloved and remains one of the community’s highest preservation priorities. \n \nParticipants will walk a total of approximately 2 miles on even\, flat terrain. The trails are mainly exposed. No water or bathrooms available at the this event. Parking is limited to street parking\, so carpooling is encouraged. Limited binoculars available to lend out. \n \nLand Trust Treks are a free\, public series of guided hikes for the community to explore scenic Santa Barbara County and to meet your local Land Trust.

SUMMARY:Trailpalooza 2024 Outdoor Festival
DESCRIPTION:The event is organized by Santa Maria Valley Open Space\, which aims to establish public trails in a natural setting for hiking\, cycling\, and horseback riding. These trails will allow passive and spontaneous access and serve the Santa Maria Valley and surrounding areas. \n \nAttendees can register for a 5\, 10\, or 15-mile trail run/walk or join the mountain bike race on a new short track that is full of jumps and technical features. \n \nFollowing the races\, attendees can indulge in local cuisine and entertainment\, all in support of Santa Maria Valley Open Space\, a nonprofit dependent on contributions for trail upkeep and expansion. \n \nSaturday Schedule   \n \n\n9 a.m. – Trail Run/Walk (Choose your distance – 5\, 10 or 15 miles) or register for the 0K: start\, done\, get your t-shirt. 10 a.m. to Noon – Jam session with local musicians (open microphone)Noon – Mountain Bike RacingNoon to 5 p.m. – Performances by local bands About Time\, Jacob Cole\, Noah Colton\, Burn Like California\, Radiation Invasion\, Joone5 p.m. Close\nVisit www.smvos.org to find links for race registration. Entry is $20 per carload\, so attendees are encouraged to bring their family and friends. All youth under the age of 18 get into the festival for free. Take the road to the right and follow it up the hill to the Newlove Picnic Grounds on Solomon Hill.

SUMMARY:Arroyo Hondo Preserve - Nature Hike
DESCRIPTION:Free docent-led nature hikes are offered at 10:00 am on Saturdays of open weekends. Visitors can also hike on their own on these days. Hikes are free of charge; however\, donations to help support Arroyo Hondo Preserve and the work of the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County are gratefully accepted. Everyone is welcome to visit the Preserve to hike\, picnic\, paint\, volunteer\, or research\, but advance reservations are required.  \n \nOnline reservations can be made here: https://www.sblandtrust.org/arroyo-hondo-preserve-reservations/  \n \nDue to the sensitivity of the resources in the canyon\, dogs\, mountain bikes\, horses\, hunting\, fishing\, and campfires are not allowed. \n \nDirections to the Preserve\nTraveling northbound on the U.S. Highway 101: The Preserve is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Santa Barbara. Approximately 4 miles past Refugio State Beach\, you will see a blue “Rest Area in 7 miles” sign followed closely by a yellow warning sign about falling rocks. The entrance to Arroyo Hondo is in 1/2 mile and will be visible on the right at the bottom of the hill. Make a right-hand turn into the driveway. Come down the driveway\, cross the bridge on the right and park near the barn.

DESCRIPTION:Free docent-led nature hikes are offered at 10:00 am on Saturdays of open weekends. Visitors can also hike on their own on these days. Hikes are free of charge; however\, donations to help support Arroyo Hondo Preserve and the work of the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County are gratefully accepted. Everyone is welcome to visit the Preserve to hike\, picnic\, paint\, volunteer\, or research\, but advance reservations are required.  \n \nOnline reservations can be made here: https://www.sblandtrust.org/arroyo-hondo-preserve-reservations/  \n \nDue to the sensitivity of the resources in the canyon\, dogs\, mountain bikes\, horses\, hunting\, fishing\, and campfires are not allowed. \n \nDirections to the Preserve\nTraveling northbound on the U.S. Highway 101: The Preserve is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Santa Barbara. Approximately 4 miles past Refugio State Beach\, you will see a blue “Rest Area in 7 miles” sign followed closely by a yellow warning sign about falling rocks. The entrance to Arroyo Hondo is in 1/2 mile and will be visible on the right at the bottom of the hill. Make a right-hand turn into the driveway. Come down the driveway\, cross the bridge on the right and park near the barn.

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Hike - Weekly on Friday Mornings
DESCRIPTION:We meet at the fountain in front of the mission at 9:30 AM in the morning for the morning hike. These hikes are on the front country trails behind Santa Barbara and Montecito. Dress appropriately with hiking boots\, comfortable clothes and bring at least a liter of water in your backpack or fanny pack. Bring sunscreen and bug repellant when necessary. The morning hike leaves at 9:30 AM SHARP and we get back between 11:30 AM and noon. There are no dogs allowed on the hikes for safety concerns. The hike is approximately 4 miles\, 2 miles up and 2 miles back. These hikes are appropriate for beginners in good health. We will carpool to the hike from the mission. SUMMARY:Pre-Trailpalooza Hike
DESCRIPTION:If you want to come\, you can still register for Trailpalooza or make a donation at the website www.smvos.org any time this week. \n \nThe hike will be combined with this month’s Land Trust Trek and led by docents and biologists from the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County\, the Natural History Museum of Santa Maria\, and Santa Maria Valley Open Space. We will look for wildflowers\, birds\, and animals while enjoying the views of the Solomon Hills. \n \nThe hike will follow the trail run course for Trailpalooza. The course is a 5-mile-loop\, mostly single track along cattle trails and some oil field roads. The tread has sections of moderate sidehill\, irregular footing\, and short sections of mud (that may dry out this week). The net elevation gain is about 1\,000 feet for the entire course. We will have an option to return for a 2.5 to 3 mile out and back also\, and you can skip the section to the top of Solomon Peak. There are restroom facilities at the picnic grounds but not on the trail. \n \nTIME AND DATE. Saturday\, April 27\, Hike starts at 9AM. Gates will be open by 830AM. \n \nDIRECTIONS. From US101 southbound\, exit onto Orcutt Hill Rd at the unmarked exit 1.5 miles south of Clark Avenue. Look for the Trailpalooza feather flags. Search Newl. Access to the hill is only allowed from the US101 side of Orcutt Hill Road. \n \nPLACE: Newlove Picnic Grounds. Self-park in an orderly manner in the field on the right side of the driveway as you enter the picnic and baseball field area. \n \nWHAT TO BRING: Water\, snacks\, sun protection\, and appropriate footwear for hiking  \n \nYou are responsible for assessing your own fitness to participate in this hike. \n \nAll participants must stay with the group and an authorized docent at all times during the hike.

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Hike - Weekly on Friday Mornings
DESCRIPTION:We meet at the fountain in front of the mission at 9:30 AM in the morning for the morning hike. These hikes are on the front country trails behind Santa Barbara and Montecito. Dress appropriately with hiking boots\, comfortable clothes and bring at least a liter of water in your backpack or fanny pack. Bring sunscreen and bug repellant when necessary. The morning hike leaves at 9:30 AM SHARP and we get back between 11:30 AM and noon. There are no dogs allowed on the hikes for safety concerns. The hike is approximately 4 miles\, 2 miles up and 2 miles back. These hikes are appropriate for beginners in good health. We will carpool to the hike from the mission. If you decide to ride with someone please be kind enough to give the driver a dollar per person for their trouble and gas. For more information contact the leader Al Sladek at alsladek@gmail.com
