SUMMARY:Dunes Refuge Community Hike
DESCRIPTION:This hike is sponsored by The Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center and the US Fish and Wildlife Service and will be led by Ray Segovia and Christina Hernandez. The hike will begin at 9:00 AM (please plan to arrive between 8:45 and 9:00). It will be a casual walk through the dunes with some elevation gain of 300 ft. \n \nThis is a moderate hike\, about 2 hours round-trip. Dress in layers\, bring water and snacks\, and have your “Dune Mother’s Wildflower Guide” by Dr. Malcolm McLeod for the trip. Long pants and closed shoes are recommended as the habitat is coastal dune scrub and there is the possibility of poison oak and ticks in the natural dune areas. For more information\, email admin@dunescenter.org. Heavy rain cancels this trip. \n \nLong pants and closed shoes are recommended as the habitat is coastal dune scrub and there is the possibility of poison oak and ticks in the natural dune areas (we will watch for and point these out so they can be avoided\, bug repellent is recommended. We will be limiting the number of people attending this hike and parking is limited\, please register early! Heavy rain cancels this trip (light rain\, bring appropriate clothing). \n \nNOTE: Pets\, smoking\, or alcohol are not allowed on the Refuge\, including the parking area\, or other properties accessed during the hike (i.e.\, State Parks and Private Property). Pets may not be left in cars in the parking areas. Remember to please pack out what you pack in. \n \nDirections from the north: Take Hwy 101 south from San Luis Obispo. Turn right (west) at the new Willow Road off ramp (Exit 180). Proceed west on Willow Road for about 4.3 miles\, to Highway 1. Turn left (south) on Highway 1 and proceed for 2.7 miles\, to Oso Flaco Lake Road. Turn right (west) on Oso Flaco Lake Road. Proceed west on Oso Flaco Lake Road for 2.5 miles to Beigle Road. Look for a 6’ tall wire mesh fence and steel gate. \n \nDirections from the south: Take 101 north to Santa Maria and take the Main Street exit toward the town of Guadalupe. Turn right onto Highway 1 and head north to Oso Flaco Lake Road (about 3 miles north of Guadalupe)\, turn left onto Oso Flaco Lake Road and proceed 2.5 miles to Beigle Road (on left). \n \nParking: We will have people posted at the entrance of the USFWS fenced road to direct parking. The gate will be open around 8:30. Please do not park on Oso Flaco Lake Road near the gate as there is not much room and it could be hazardous. There should be plenty of room to park along the USFWS access road. The Oso Flaco Lake State Park lot is another ¾ miles west of Beigle Road\, if you need to use a restroom before the hike (there are none along the hike route). \n \nAdditional Information: The Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes-Point Sal Coastal Area contains the largest\, relatively undisturbed coastal dune tract in California and was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1974. Five major plant communities are represented including pioneer/foredunes; coastal dune scrub; riparian woodland; coastal dune freshwater marshes\, ponds\, and swales; and active interior dunes. The flora includes many endemic plant species\, and the dunes habitats support numerous rare\, threatened and endangered plants and animals. For more information on the history\, culture\, and biology of the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes\, we recommend you check out the Dune Center website or visit the Dunes Center located at 1065 Guadalupe Street\, in the town of Guadalupe. \n \nRegister here! \nhttps://checkout.square.site/buy/NIEH33I4NQZA3D5ZGGPFO5PB

SUMMARY:Botanic Garden - Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Forest bathing honors the ancient human practices of nature connection. Elena Rios will give you directions in the form of invitations to assist you in slowing down and observing with all of your senses. It isn’t so much about knowing all of the names of the plants as it is about noticing which plants you feel pulled to. It is more about being “here” in the moment. As you “bathe” in the fresh air and immune-boosting phytoncides\, you may begin to notice things in a way you may not have ever noticed them before. This practice can potentially remind us of the Interconnection of All Things and our relationship to the Earth. The event ends with a ceremony of sharing tea made from locally foraged native plants and some healthy snacks. All you have to do is come and be yourself…and reconnect with nature and the more-than-human world. This walk includes slight downhill and uphill inclines on terrain that is rocky and uneven in certain portions. \n \nAlthough the Garden is dog-friendly\, participants are asked not to bring their dog(s) to this event. \n \nGuests will meet Elena behind the Entrance Kiosk. \n \nPricing:\nGarden Members: $25 \nGeneral Public: $35 \n \nAbout Elena Ríos:\nElena Ríos is an ever-evolving ANFT Certified Nature & Forest Therapy Guide and Inter-disciplinary Artist. From an early age\, Elena’s family cultivated in her an interest in the exploration and appreciation of nature and the more-than-human world. Elena Continues to participate with traditional circles of learning\, wellness\, and ways of being that are rooted in Indigenous knowledge. She believes this practice has the potential to assist us in noticing the Interconnectedness of All Things. She draws inspiration from her grandmother\, who was a curandera. She has had a partnership as a cultural practitioner with Japanese Shinto Priest\, Hiroji Seikiguchi for almost 20 years. Currently\, she is an employee of the Chumash Fire Department\, Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. She is an indigenous Azteca Chichimeca woman of the Americas with distant genetic Chumash links including multi-ethnic Spanish\, Scot-Irish ancestry.” Her guide style is informed by all of these previous life experiences.

SUMMARY:Nature Hike With Assemblymember Gregg Hart
DESCRIPTION:We will meet in Carpinteria at the Tomol Interpretive Play Area on Carpinteria State Beach grounds to hike to the Carpinteria Harbor Seal Preserve and rookery. In addition to enjoying the stunning views of the ocean and the Channel Islands\, Assemblymember Hart will share highlights of his nascent experience as a member of several legislative committees\, including the recreation-focused Committee on Water\, Parks\, and Wildlife. \n \nOur route starts at the play area and follows Linden Avenue to the beach\, where we will take a boardwalk across dunes before turning inland and following a path around the State Park campgrounds and across the bluffs of Tar Pits Park. The trail is well-maintained and offers stunning views of the ocean and the surrounding mountains. After about 1.3 miles\, the trail reaches the Carpinteria Harbor Seal Preserve. The preserve is home to a large colony of harbor seals\, which can be seen sunbathing on the rocks or swimming in the ocean. The rookery is also home to a variety of other birds\, including pelicans\, gulls\, and cormorants. After exploring the preserve\, we will return to the Tomol Interpretive Play Area. \n \nDetails \n \n\nDate: April 23\, 2023\nTime: 10 am – 12 pm\nDistance: 2.8 miles round trip\nDifficulty: Easy\nTrailhead: Tomol Interpretive Play Area\, Carpinteria State Beach\, 389 Linden Ave\, Carpinteria\, CA (across from The Spot diner) \nParking: Use the parking lot for the train station on Linden Avenue.\nMaps: A trail map is available online.\nRestrooms: There are restrooms in Carpinteria State Beach.\nBring water\, sturdy shoes\, and sun protection.\n\n \nHistory Note \nIn 1769\, the Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola led an expedition through California and met the local Chumash people at the village of ‘Mishopshnow’ near what we now call Carpinteria Creek. Portola observed several of their plank “Tomol” canoes being constructed and incorporating the naturally-occurring asphalt (tar) into their design. As a result\, members of the Spanish expedition referred to the area as La Carpinteria or ‘The Carpenter Shop\,’ later to become Carpinteria.

DESCRIPTION:The event will benefit Route One Farmers’ Market in its efforts to expand food access throughout the community and include an Earth Day-themed trivia contest\, workshops\, craft vendors\, and food trucks. \n \nThe fun starts at 2 p.m. when the brewery will allow Route One to “take over” the West Ocean Avenue business with indoor and outdoor workshops\, said Shelby Wild Brown\, executive director of Route One.
