SUMMARY:Sedgwick Reserve | Quail Trail
DESCRIPTION:S O L D  O U T  \nAfter a climb\, it provides beautiful views of the Reserve from Lisque Mesa. You learn about some of the key research that goes on at Sedgwick. This route is 2.5 miles and has about 250 feet of elevation change. It is considered slightly harder than our easiest trails because it includes a steep ascent and descent. To go on this hike you should be able to walk up 25 flights of stairs. \n \nRegistration required. Visit web site: https://sedgwick.nrs.ucsb.edu/store/April-13-2024-c165736253 \n \nEnrollment is limited to 20 adults. \n \nPet Policy: Please leave your dog at home. They are not allowed on the trails\, and the parking area is not shaded. \n \nThese are docent-led\, interpretive hikes\, and while you will get some miles under your feet\, they move at a naturalist’s pace. You will learn about flora\, fauna\, geology\, history\, and more as you immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of this beautiful landscape. Our experienced docent guides lead multiple levels of hikes to accommodate a diversity of abilities\, from easy to strenuous. In the event of rain\, hikes will be canceled via e-mail the day before. \n

Hikers are welcome to bring a lunch and enjoy it in the shade of beautiful valley oaks at our Field Station picnic area.  \nSecure your hike with $20/person registration fee (kids under 13 are free). The opening of online registration will be announced by email on Saturday\, December 28th. Click HERE to sign up for our mailing list and don’t delay registration once hikes are announced – they fill up quickly! \nIn the event of rain hikes will be cancelled and registrants will be notified via email 24 hours in advance. \nCheck-in opens at 8:30am and hikes will depart promptly at 9am.  \nThree levels of intensity are offered for the January 11 hike day: \nEasy Hike: Mesa Trail.  Approximately 1.5 hours and 1 mile with 400 feet of elevational gain. An easy stroll along the Mesa with a good share of interpretation and vistas.  Includes a long stair climb and a short down hill stretch\, about two hours total. An optional tour of the restored Ranch House and the hundred year old barn\, home of our Sedgwick Barn Owl. Appropriate for children and seniors.  Bring water and snacks. The easy hike is limited to the first 20 people who sign up.  \nModerate Hike: Blue Schist Trail.  Approximately 2.35 miles with 630 feet of elevational gain. A moderately strenuous hike with two long grades to climb.  Moderate amount of interpretation by docents\, beautiful vistas\, wildflowers in season\, the results of a dormant earthquake uplift to see\, and interesting rock formations.  Almost three hours.  Our most popular hike. Bring water and snacks. The moderate hike is limited to the first 20 people who sign up. \n\nStrenuous Hike: Northeast Loop.  Approximately 5 miles with 1460 feet elevation change. An aerobic workout at the northern end of the Reserve.  Hills to climb and wonderful vistas and wildflowers in season.  Not much interpretation by docents and almost four hours long.  Bring water and snacks. The strenuous hike is limited to the first 20 people who sign up.

DESCRIPTION:Features of the Fransican formation: Little Pine and Cameusa fault zones; serpentinite\, chert\, blue schist outcroppings.\n\nParticipants need to be in good physical condition with good balance. Carrying plenty of water is required. Sturdy boots\, brimmed hat and hiking pole; snacks/lunch are suggested. \nENROLLMENT CAP: 20 adults\n\nSam Spaulding\, a docent and part-time steward of the Reserve\, received a degree in Cultural Anthropology from UCSB before working for the Channel Islands National Park Service as an archeologist and wildlife manager. \nThere is a suggested donation of $20 pp to support the public education program.  \nOne form per registrant\, please. \nRegister

DESCRIPTION:Join Fred Emerson on a 3 hour moderate interpretive walking tour of the Sedgwick Reserve\, from 9:00am to noon.\nExperience oak woodlands & savannas\, coastal sage scrub\, the pond\, & agricultural lands\, & learn about conservation biology & ecology. \nFred Emerson is a life-long student of biology and conservation of natural resources.  His career includes state\, federal\, and university employment as a teacher and practitioner of wildlife management and medicine. Fred has led field trips on the Sedgwick Reserve for over 20 years. \nRegistration required. Classes focus on the ecology of Sedgwick Reserve and are led by scientists\, educators and naturalists specializing in California’s physical and natural sciences. \n\n\nWhat to Expect \n\n Pre-registration is required. \n For more information about a particular class please email us at sedgwick@lifesci.ucsb.edu. \n    \nWe encourage car pooling; please respect wildlife and neighbors by driving cautiously on Brinkerhoff Avenue.\n    \nClass organization begins at 8:30 on the steps of the Tipton Meeting House unless noted otherwise.\n    \nThere are bathrooms\, water fountains and picnic tables for your use before and after class. \n    \n\nWhat We’ll Need From You\n \n\nA registration form for each participant. \n    \nYou will be asked to sign a University of California Waiver of Liability\, Assumption of Risk\, and Indemnity Agreement. \n A suggested donation of $20.00 per person in support of the public education program is greatly appreciated.
