Western Snowy Plover Tour at Coal Oil Point Reserve

Description

Join the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County on an exclusive tour led by our partners at Coal Oil Point Reserve to learn about the endangered Western Snowy Plover and their habitat! Our docent for this tour is Cristina Sandoval, PhD, Director of the Reserve for 30 years! She and her experienced team will guide us around a full loop of Coal Oil Point Reserve. This tour will be 4 miles on mostly flat, but sandy terrain. The group must stay together and complete the entire tour. The initial descent onto the beach is a steep and sandy hill (~25ft). Please consider bringing hiking poles for extra stability, if desired. Learn about coastal ecology, the history of Coal Oil Point, and, of course, the endangered (and adorable) Western Snowy Plover. Their nesting season runs from March to September, so there's a chance we'll see some tiny plover chicks running around the beach! NO DOGS are allowed on this tour. Prior reservations are required to attend this event. Participants will be required to sign an additional online waiver from Coal Oil Point Reserve prior to attending. Binoculars are recommended to see the birds. Located in Goleta, California, Coal Oil Point Reserve is one of 41 reserves of the University of California Natural Reserve System (NRS). The NRS’s mission is to contribute to the understanding and wise management of the Earth and its natural systems by supporting university-level teaching, research, and public service in protected natural areas throughout California.   Land Trust Treks are a free, public series of guided hikes for the community to explore scenic Santa Barbara County and to meet your local Land Trust.
