Enos Memorial Hike | Wildlife Refuge

The Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center, in collaboration with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, is thrilled to host an invigorating hike through the picturesque Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes National Wildlife Refuge. Led by our expert guide, Ray Segovia, this hike promises stunning coastal views and a deep dive into the conservation efforts that have preserved these beautiful dunes. Hike Highlights:
  • Route: From the refuge entrance to the Enos Memorial statue
  • Duration: Approximately 2.5 hours round-trip
  • Elevation Gain: 300 ft
  • Distance:  Moderate hike with some elevation
What to Bring: - Dress in layers - Water and snacks - Long pants and closed-toe shoes (to protect against coastal dune scrub, poison oak, and ticks) Important Notes: Registration: Spaces are limited; please register early to secure your spot. Parking: Limited parking available; please follow directions provided below and park along the USFWS access road. Restrictions: No pets, smoking, or alcohol allowed on the refuge or in the parking area. Pets cannot be left in cars. Hazards: Because this area is a wildlife refuge, this is the home of many critters, including rattlesnakes! For your safety, we recommend wearing sturdy closed-toed shoes and long pants. Directions: From the North: take Hwy 101 south from San Luis Obispo. Turn right (west) at Willow Road off-ramp (Exit 180). Proceed west on Willow Road for 4.3 miles to Highway 1. Turn left (south) on Highway 1 and continue for 2.7 miles to Oso Flaco Lake Road. Turn right (west) on Oso Flaco Lake Road and proceed for 2.5 miles to Beigle Road. Look for a 6’ tall wire mesh fence and steel gate. From the South: Take Hwy 101 north to Santa Maria. Exit at Main Street toward Guadalupe. Turn right onto Highway 1 and head north to Oso Flaco Lake Road (about 3 miles north of Guadalupe). Turn left onto Oso Flaco Lake Road and proceed 2.5 miles to Beigle Road (on left). Parking Instructions: - Meet at the entrance of the USFWS fenced road for parking directions. The gate will open around 8:30 AM. Do not park on Oso Flaco Lake Road near the gate as it is hazardous. You can park along the USFWS access road. If you need to use a restroom, the Oso Flaco Lake State Park lot is another ¾ miles west of Beigle Road. Additional Information: The Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes-Point Sal Coastal Area is California’s largest undisturbed coastal dune tract, designated a National Natural Landmark in 1974. It supports five major plant communities and numerous rare, threatened, and endangered species.
