Join Fred Emerson on a 3 hour moderate interpretive walking tour of the Sedgwick Reserve, from 9:00am to noon. Experience oak woodlands & savannas, coastal sage scrub, the pond, & agricultural lands, & learn about conservation biology & ecology.
Fred Emerson is a life-long student of biology and conservation of natural resources. His career includes state, federal, and university employment as a teacher and practitioner of wildlife management and medicine. Fred has led field trips on the Sedgwick Reserve for over 20 years.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Walking Ecology classes of Sedgwick Reserve are offered on the second Saturdays of the month between December and August. Classes focus on the ecology of Sedgwick Reserve and are led by scientists, educators and naturalists specializing in California's physical and natural sciences.
What to Expect
- Pre-registration is required.
- For more information about a particular class please email us at sedgwick@lifesci.ucsb.edu.
- We encourage car pooling; please respect wildlife and neighbors by driving cautiously on Brinkerhoff Avenue.
- Class organization begins at 8:30 on the steps of the Tipton Meeting House unless noted otherwise.
- There are bathrooms, water fountains and picnic tables for your use before and after class.
What We'll Need From You
- A registration form for each participant.
- You will be asked to sign a University of California Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk, and Indemnity Agreement.
- A suggested donation of $20.00 per person in support of the public education program is greatly appreciated. Your donation can be made online here or on day of the class by cash or a check made out to UC REGENTS.
- Please be prepared for a morning in the field. See below for what to bring, and not bring!
What to Bring
- Sturdy walking or hiking shoes are recommended. Tennis shoes are permitted, sandals are not.
- Long pants and long sleeves are recommended (we do have ticks!)
- Wear a hat & apply sunscreen
- Bring plenty of water and a trail snack
Rain Cancellation
- Hikes will not take place in or following periods of rain. Information regarding cancellations will be sent out by email and via message on the Reserve's answering machine (805) 686-1941.
Pet Policy
- Please leave your dog at home. They are not allowed on the trails and the parking area is not shaded.
