Sierra Club Hike | Horseshoe Bend

HORSESHOE BEND: Moderate 9 miles rt with 300 loss/gain. Our hike in the San Rafael Wilderness will pass through lovely areas of oak woodlands and riparian habitats, with valleys that open out into beautiful meadows and grasslands. We will stop for lunch at a lovely swimming hole and then head back the way we came. There will be many shallow creek crossings so it’s best to wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet. Intermediate hikers or beginners with cardio conditioning welcome, under 18 must be accompanied by a parent. Bring two liters of water, snacks, and sun protection. Meet behind B of A on State St. at Hope Ave. at 8am.

IMPORTANT: Please read the description carefully. Do not attend a hike that is above your ability. The ratings (easy, moderate, strenuous etc.) are based on someone who already hikes in our local mountains regularly.

You may be asked not to join the hike because of the following:

  • Lack of appropriate clothing/footwear.
  • Lack of sufficient water. TWO LITERS is a good starting point.
  • Lack of adequate gear. Please bring a backpack to carry your lunch and water.
  • Lack of sufficient food if the hike may last most of the day.
  • The hike leader has the right to refuse letting someone join the hike for any reason
  • Please be prepared for an all-day adventure.

WAIVER: All participants on Sierra Club outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver. If you would like to read the liability waiver before you choose to participate on an outing, refer to it on the public website:
